Košice (Hungarian Kassa; German Kaschau), city of the Slovak Republic, chief town of the Východoslovenský (Eastern Slovakia), on the river Hornád. It is an important industrial center with oil refineries and varied light industries. In the city numerous historical buildings of relief rise, between which the Gothic cathedral of Saint Elizabeth (XIV-XV century). From his foundation (1241), Košice suffered varied dominations (Austrian, Turkish, Hungarian and Russian). With the Treaty of the Trianon (1920), the city passed from Hungary to Czechoslovakia; he returned then to Hungary in 1939, to the burst of the second world war, and it was again Czechoslovak at the end of the conflict. Subsequently, Košice was center of the first Czechoslovak government, that opened the road to the communist regime. In the following years the city was developed quickly, doubling the population and becoming the cultural and economic center of the region. After the division of Czechoslovakia (January 1st of 1993), Košice became part of the Slovak Republic.
